Brechin City will have one of the youngest Skippers in the Scottish League next season with the appointment of Darren Smith as club captain.

Darren, who has led the side in the pre-season games against Hibs and Dunfermline, has been in great form in the early matches.

'Daz' replaces Steven Ferguson as skipper, who left City to sign for 3rd division outfit Stenhousemuir.

He said: "I want to say what an honour it is to be appointed captain of a club like Brechin City. I have a hard act to follow in Stevie Ferguson, but hopefully I can help the lads on and off the park.

"We'll appoint a deputy shortly, but my job involves organising things for the players away from games as well as the stuff the fans see on a Saturday. I am relishing the job and I will also be keeping our fans up to date by writing a piece in our match programme.

"I think we've done reasonably well in pre-season and the lads can't wait for the big ball to come out."

Michael O'Neill added: "Darren has all the attributes to excel in the job. His form has already impressed all of us and we are looking for more of the same from him. He brings 100 per cent commitment to everything he does, be it training or matches and that's what we require in a competent environment like the second division."

Darren, of course, comes from a footballing family, his dad Ian had a senior career with Dundee, Alloa, Berwick and Meadowbank and is also on the Berwick Rangers' board of directors. Darren's grandfather also played at international level for Scotland.
