Brechin City chairman David Birse is set to call time on his tenure at Glebe Park when the club holds its AGM tonight at the Northern Hotel. The AGM starts at 7:00pm and all season ticket holders are requested to attend.

The popular figure has taken the difficult decision to step down from the board after an eventful 27 years in which the club has enjoyed a number of euphoric highs and weathered the odd low.

And while he admits that he is enjoying the sport as much now as the first day he stepped into the role, he believes a "clean break" will inject new life into the club at a time when things are looking promising for the future.

"I am making this decision very much with mixed feelings," he said. "There are some quite strong emotions I suppose because 27 years is quite a long time to be involved with anything.

"But I did state two years ago my intention to move on. I stayed on an extra year at the time because of our new manager and haven't regretted that at all.

"Nothing lasts forever though and I feel that I should now give someone else a go - it is better to go while you're still enjoying it and I really am enjoying things as much as the day I joined.

"So I'm making a clean break. It is only fair to step back and let the guys get on with it but I'll always be on hand to help if they need it.

"And I certainly intend on being at the ground for every game where possible. I definitely don't want to miss too many because I feel to much for the club to miss many," he added.

Looking back on his 27 year stint with the club David's favourite highlights include Brechin's closely-fought Scottish Cup tie against Rangers at Ibrox and also the centenary celebrations last year.

He is also delighted at the number of friends he has made within the game over the years.

"There are many, many highlights but I suppose the cup tie at Ibrox is probably the best because we put up a fantastic show," he continued.

"Obviously the centenary year was another of the highlights. And then I've also made a lot of friends at other clubs over the years and after 27 years it is a wee bit hard to think I might not see some of them again.

"Football has been really good to me and I only hope that I've been able to put a wee bit back in because it has been very, very rewarding.

"I've had so much help over the years, not just from the committee who have been fantastic, both past and present, but also through the great support we've had from the fans.

"They've been immense and I wish them all the best for the future and I will be there rooting for the club," he added.

David may have mixed emotions over his planned exit, but his timing resulted in a suitable send-off in the form of last nights friendly against a full-strength Hibs side. And the significance of the clash is not lost on David.

"We don't usually have any pre-season games before the AGM but it was the only time that Hibs could fit in," he said.

"They fielded their first team so it is a lift for the club and I was only too glad to be involved with that before I sign off," he added.

David's long association with the City board will come to an end at Wednesday's AGM, which will be held in the Northern Hotel at 7pm.
