Heriot-Watt Game - By Keith Johnston

Brechin City were in the limelight once again last night when they became the first league club to play at Heriot-Watt University's newly developed sports facilities in Edinburgh.

Dick Campbell took his side south after receiving an invitation to come and open the facilities, which he described as "magnificent".

The University side put up a strong fight, but goals from Chris Templeman (3), Graham Gibson (2), Jamie Smith and Roddy Black gave City a 7-0 victory and left the manager delighted with the exercise.

"To be honest, I don't think a game like this did us any harm at all. It was a wonderful environment to play football in and the University should be congratulated on their multi-million pound investment, which is undoubtedly one of the best of its kind in the country.

"I would love to see more and more facilities like this one build right across the country in an attempt to help Scottish coaches develop our players at all levels of the game.

"The game itself was a good work out and it was good to see the striker's amongst the goals again. Chris actually missed a penalty, but we were delighted with the application and professionalism of the players. Sometimes games like these can be a banana skin, but that wasn't the case."

The facilities include; Pitches:

These facilities include two international standard grass pitches (105m x 68m), one with floodlighting and both with automatic sprinkler systems. A further three high quality grass pitches together with a dedicated goalkeepers practice area are also available.

Floodlit Synthetic Grass Pitch:

Situated in a dedicated area together with the main competition grass football pitch, behind a security fencing, this floodlit Fieldturf synthetic grass pitch is available for Football training and matches.

Football Astrodome:

The indoor Football Astrodome comprises two 38 x 22m, 5-A-Side Fieldturf synthetic grass Football Pitches.

Mark Ritchie of Heriot-Watt University added: "I would like to thank Brechin City FC for bringing down such a strong side to open our new facilities here. Dick had a full squad with him with the exception of Paul Ritchie, Charlie King and Grant Johnson and we are grateful to everyone at Brechin for their support."

Meanwhile, the manager revealed that an as yet unnamed player will be joining the club next week so he can run the rule over him: "The guy in question previously played with an SPL club and has been playing over in Ireland, so this will give us the chance to look at him and him to look at us."
