Brechin City are back on the road this weekend as we travel north to face Turriff United at The Haughs tomorrow afternoon, with a place in the R Davidson (Banchory) Highland League Cup final at stake.
With attention turning from league duties to cup action, City will be aiming to carry their impressive recent form into what promises to be a well-contested semi-final.
Having never reached the final of this competition, Andy Kirks’ side have extra motivation to make history and take one step closer to silverware. Confidence is high within the squad following 4 wins on the spin and they will be determined to deliver another strong performance as they look to continue their fine run of form.
TEAM NEWS
Brad McKay will be available for tomorrow’s cup tie, as the second match of his suspension applies to league fixtures only. He will therefore miss the midweek game against Deveronvale. A late check will be made on Kieran Inglis to establish if he is ready to be part of the squad whilst Paul Watson will continue to miss out.
MANAGERS COMMENTS
Reflecting on an impressive 3-0 win against Buckie Thistle in midweek, Manager Andy Kirk commented, “Going up to Buckie was a tough fixture off the back of the game against Brora where we were down to 10 men for most of the game. To go up to Buckie at any point and win is not easy and I thought we were well worthy of the victory. We probably could have had at least a couple more goals if we’re being really greedy but some of our players were out on their feet by the end which just shows how much they’ve put into these last couple of games.
“I thought we started the game well and then when we scored the first goal I thought we got caught up in the pitch and turned the ball over too many times. We had the two goals ruled out for offside and Fraser and Grady both produced good saves from the keeper in the first half along with another couple of efforts where they should have hit the target. Any time we put our foot on the ball and played, we created chances.
“Second half was always going to be difficult when you’re 3-0 up but we changed the shape and also make 5 substitutions so that has an impact as well. We’ve got to manage games as much as we can and we’ve got players on the bench that are desperate to get on the pitch – they all want to be in the starting 11. Our fitness is improving and that will only get better with the run of games we’ve got coming up and we just need to keep everyone as fresh and hungry as possible.“
Looking ahead to tomorrow’s semi-final against Turriff United, Andy added, “Every game we play we want to be as competitive as we can. We will do everything we can to win and the added bonus is that we have the potential to reach a final and compete for another trophy. As a player you’ve got to be hungry to win silverware.”

Tomorrow’s match at the Haughs kicks off at 3pm. Admission prices are £12 for adults and £6 for concessions. The supporters bar at the ground will be open to all supporters from 1pm.

ROUTE TO THE SEMIS
City booked their place in the last four courtesy of two dramatic 3–2 victories. They edged past Clachnacuddin in the opening round with Grady McGrath netting the winner in added time, before repeating the scoreline against Nairn County in the quarter-finals. That tie was switched to Balmoral Stadium after a waterlogged pitch at Glebe Park forced the change of venue, but City showed resilience to net late again through Mitchell Findlay to progress.
Turriff, meanwhile, have enjoyed a more emphatic route to the semi-finals. They swept aside Rothes 6–0 in the first round before following up with a 3–1 win over Inverurie Locos., with both ties played at The Haughs. Having made home advantage count so far, they will be eager to make it a hat-trick of victories on their own turf to secure a place in the final.

City claimed a 3–1 victory over Turriff United in a game that was goalless at half-time but opened up in the second half. Grady McGrath broke the deadlock shortly after the break, and Kieran Sweeney netted an unlikely double later in the half to give City a commanding 3–0 lead.
Turriff managed a late consolation through Miller Keir in the final minute, but it was little more than a consoluation as City made it 5 wins on the bounce.
