Match Preview | Brechin City v Inverurie Locos - By Steven Mew

City have another break from league action this weekend as we play host to Inverurie Locos in the 1st round of the R Davidson (Banchory) Highland League Cup tomorrow afternoon.

After bowing out of the competition at the semi-final stage against Fraserburgh last season, City will undoubtedly be looking to go one further and reach the final for the first time since entering the Highland League.

TEAM NEWS
City will continue to be without the services of Anthony McDonald and Scott Logan who are at least another week away from returning to training whilst captain Euan Spark misses through suspension following his red card in the competition last season. City's squad will be boosted by the addition of loan signing Lewis Milne, whilst another player is expected to join the Club ahead of the match.

MANAGERS COMMENTS
Speaking on the 3-1 victory over Formartine United last weekend, Manager Patrick Cregg said, "I was really happy with the lads and first half I thought it was as good as we've been - we came out with high energy and tempo in terms of our pressing and willingness to run and compete and that is how you win games of football. There is a trend in that we start games well and this time we got the goals.

In the second half we had to suffer a bit without Formartine really testing Lenny but you aren't going to have everything on your own terms. I still thought we had the better standard of chances in the second period.

"I thought Fraser Macleod was absolutely outstanding and his recognition of space, when to go in behind, when to go out to the side and it's really smart. You could also see just how good Brad (McKay) is in the second half too but all of the boys played their part.

"We will get back to keeping clean sheets as we are minimising the attempts on our goal and our counter-pressing and aggression is stopping the opposition from getting those opportunities."

LAST TIME OUT
Both sides were in league action last weekend – City were 3-1 winners over Formartine at the Carnegie Fuels Stadium at Glebe Park. Inverurie meanwhile fought back from 2-0 down to equalise against Huntly at Harlaw Park, but succumbed to a last minute goal as Huntly took all 3 points.

PREVIOUS MEETING
Brechin City 2-0 Inverurie Locos – 7th August 2024
City ran out comfortable winners over the Locos in a midweek fixture earlier in the season. City dominated for much of the game but went in level at the break, with Ewan Loudon missing a first half penalty. Patrick Cregg’s men kept pushing in the second period and got their just deserts with Ewan Loudon making amends with the opener shortly before the hour mark, whilst Dayle Robertson doubled the advantage ten minutes later.
