Match Preview | Brechin City v Spartans - By Steven Mew

Just over five months on from the pulsating Pyramid Playoff tie between the sides, City and Spartans go head to head again in the 2nd round of the Scottish Cup at the Carnegie Fuels Stadium at Glebe Park tomorrow afternoon.

A few eyebrows will have been raised as the two sides were drawn together and City will be looking to avenge for their penalty shootout defeat against the Edinburgh outfit who went on to win promotion to League 2.

Indeed, Dougie Samuel's side have more than held their own in League 2 and sit just two points off the summit after the first quarter of the season. They have lost just once in their opening ten matches and also performed admirably in the League Cup, including an impressive 1-0 win over Dundee United.

City themselves are also on a good run of form, having won 8 of the last 9 games but will be looking to hit the ground running again having been without a match since the 4th October.

TEAM NEWS
City will continue to be without long-term injury victim Anthony McDonald, whilst Kevin McHattie is a doubt due to a hip problem.

MANAGERS COMMENTS
Following a long layoff, Manager Andy Kirk and the players are raring to get back to action. Andy commented, "It's been frustrating because, the Highland League Cup semi-final aside, things have been going well for us. You just want to keep that momentum going but unfortunately we can't control the weather and we are just looking forward to get back playing again.

"We played against Kirriemuir Thistle in a bounce game last Tuesday which gave the lads some much needed minutes, especially the likes of Ewan Loudon and Michael McArthur who have been out through injury. It was a very productive game (with City winning 8-0) and allowed us to try a few things.

"The whole training facility in Dundee was shut down last week so we had nowhere to train which was also frustrating but we've put in an extra training session this week just to give us a bit more preparation and to get more sharpness in the legs."

Looking forward to tomorrow's cup tie against Spartans, he said, "People will see it a chance to get revenge but it's a totally different scenario. Last season it was a tie between two sides that did well in their respective leagues and ultimately came down to a penalty shootout. Spartans have moved up a league and proved that they are good enough to hold their own and they are doing very well in League 2. They've also added one or two players to their squad so we know it's going to be a real challenge against a strong team.

"If we put in a good performance then we're capable of causing any team problems and you just hope on the day that things will fall our way and we can get through to the next round. It will give us a chance to see where we are at compared to Spartans who are up at the top end of League 2."
