Match Preview | Brechin City v Wick Academy - By Steven Mew

Following a positive performance in midweek, City are back at the Glebe tomorrow afternoon as Wick Academy make the long journey south for another vital Highland League fixture.

City will head into the game full of confidence following a 3-0 win over Nairn County on Wednesday whilst our visitors will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing defeat at home to bottom side Strathspey Thistle.

TEAM NEWS
Despite a couple of slight knocks on Wednesday, Manager Andy Kirk is hopeful of having another full roster to choose from.

MANAGERS COMMENTS
Commenting on the 3-0 win over Nairn County on Wednesday evening, Manager Andy Kirk said, "I was pleased with the performance. We've been without a game for over 2 weeks and our last one was probably our worst performance of the season. The players have trained really well and we were excited about the game but we needed to hit the ground running. We were a bit rusty in certain moments but overall I was pleased with the attitude and the effort and there was some real moments of quality. The first two goals in particular were fantastic. I've not seen the footage as yet so I'm not sure if the offside goals should have been ruled out or not but it was very tight."

"It was great to see our two strikers getting on the scoresheet again and Ewan Loudon came on late on and added a real spark for us. He gave us a bit of energy that we needed and did well for the 3rd goal - he was positive and set it up on a plate for Botti. Overall it was a very positive night for us."

Defender Euan Spark made his first appearance for over 10 weeks following injury with Andy adding, "Sparky lifts the standards and we have missed him over the last number of weeks. Hamish has also come back and has given us a big presence. Overall everyone last night played their part - everything we done last night was everything we lacked in recent games. If I'm being really critical, there is still a lot more to come from them and they know that. We've got to be pleased with what we delivered last night but we've got to keep demanding more.

Looking ahead to tomorrow's match, he said, "We have two games to recover but there a lot of other teams doing the same. Wick played on Wednesday too so they are in a similar position to ourselves. We have a very fit group and that's one the biggest things this season - those levels have been different class and hopefully that stands us in good stead for the games coming up.

"On Wednesday we had a full squad with one player left out and that's the first time this season that we've had that situation. There will hopefully be scope to give players a rest here and there and rotate the squad. There is competition for places and as a team we need everybody ready to play at any point."

PREVIOUS MEETING
Wick Academy 0-3 Brechin City - 4 February 2023
City’s long journey north to Caithness proved to a fruitful one as a brace from captain Jamie Bain, his first goals for the club, sandwiched a goal from Jordan Northcott to help Andy Kirk’s men to victory over the Scorries at the start of last month.

With a heavy surface, strong wind and occasional driving rain – it was far from ideal conditions for a game of football and City had to show their battling qualities against a physical Wick outfit that were reduced to 9 men.

SPONSORSHIP & MASCOT
Sponsoring the game tomorrow is the Northern Hotel whilst the matchball sponsor is Tom Parrish. Our mascot meanwhile will be brothers Kai and Ollie Barker.
