Match Preview | Deveronvale v Brechin City - By Steven Mew

Following a penalty shootout win over Hibernian B in midweek, attention now turns back to league action as City travel to Banff to face Deveronvale tomorrow afternoon.

Having recorded comfortable victories in both fixtures against the Vale last season, Andy Kirk's side will travel north looking to maintain their 100% start following wins over Rothes, Forres Mechanics and Formartine United.

Our opponents tomorrow have had a mixed start to the season. An opening day defeat at Fraserburgh was followed by a 2-0 victory over Lossiemouth and last weekend they had to settle for a point away to Strathspey Thistle.

TEAM NEWS
After missing the last two matches with a slight niggle, defender Hamish Thomson may be available for selection which would give Manager Andy Kirk a full squad to choose from.

MANAGERS COMMENTS
Manager Andy Kirk said, "I'm very pleased with how the last week has gone for us. We knew the Formartine game would be tough but I thought we looked very comfortable throughout and they didn't threaten us too much. Some of our play was very good and we were pleased with the result.

"It was a totally different challenge against Hibs on Wednesday but it was a game that we felt we could win. I thought we deserved to win over the piece - in the first half we were by far the better side and we were unfortunate not to go in at the break one or two goals up.

"Second half was more of an even affair. You could see the fitness levels kick in when they are able to bring on substitutes who are full time and training every day. Towards the end we had players who had run themselves into the ground - as they have done since pre-season.

"We were disappointed with the goal that we conceded as there were a couple of moments where we could have stopped it but overall we can't complain as Lenny (Wilson) didn't have an awful lot to do.

"In the shootout there were some excellent penalties from ourselves and Lenny pulled off an unbelievable save from what was a decent spot kick - he got a good hand to it. The save set us up and put a bit of pressure on them - our penalty takers handled the situation very well.

"Nathan Cooney had his first start since he came off after 5 minutes against Brora back in January. He's had a long road to recovery in terms of rehab but he looked comfortable on Wednesday and he still had a bit to go to get himself back up to full speed. Nathan will be a big player for us, I have no doubt.

"It will be a great test for us against Stirling Albion in the next round and it is very much something we are looking forward to. We know it will be good for us to put our wits against a team in a higher league and see how we handle that situation. It will be a different type of game from what we face every week and we will be able to see how far away we are, if at all."

Looking ahead to tomorrow's match against Deveronvale, Andy commented, "The last match up at Banff we were really good in the first half, if a lot slow at times in our build up. Second half we didn't start well - Deveronvale were on the front foot and caused us some issues. We ran out comfortable winners in the end but there was a period where we weren't quite at it.

"Tomorrow will be another tough one for us coming off the back of the performance in midweek. We won't be taking anything for granted and we'll be ready to go again."

PREVIOUS MEETING
Brechin City 4-0 Deveronvale - 18 December 2021
City ran out comfortable winners in the last meeting between the sides at a foggy Glebe Park in December. A wonderstrike from Max Kucheriavyi opened the scoring midway through the first half, before Murray Mackintosh doubled the advantage just before the break. Kucheriavyi grabbed his second with a smart free kick on 67 minutes before Jack Milne rounded off the scoring seven minutes later.
