Everyone at the Club is delighted to inform our supporters of the appointment of Ken Ferguson as Honorary Vice President and Martin Smith as Honorary Member.
Both Ken and Martin stood down from their respective roles as Chairman and Vice-Chairman at the end of last season following many years of outstanding service to the Club.
Interim Chairman Kevin Mackie commented, "On behalf of everyone at Brechin City Football Club we would like to bestow upon Ken the accolade of Honorary Vice President and Martin, that of Honorary Member.
"This decision is based on the the exemplary service both have given to the Club over a number of years in a variety of committee roles as well as Ken representing the Club and the league as part of the SFA.
"There is no doubt that their commitment to the Club forms part of its history and they should be proud of their achievements which are recognised by everyone involved with the Club and the community of Brechin."
KEN FERGUSON:- Ken’s long relationship with Brechin City started in the 1980’s when he was introduced to the Club by then Club Secretary George Johnston.
Ken carried his hobby of photography into the game as he took the action shots for the matchday programme. This lead to Ken helping with the programme and eventually becoming the Programme Editor.
Ken joined the Management Committee in 1993 following Cardo Gallaccio’s retirement, Ken was tasked with commercial activities such as sponsorships and trackside advertising.
When George Johnston fell ill in 1996 Ken was asked by the then Chairman Hugh Campbell Adamson to take on the role of Club Secretary. This entailed a sharp learning curve as Ken was required to administer player registrations and club correspondence amongst other things.
Ken succeeded David Birse as Club Chairman in 2007, over the years Ken has organised over a dozen sportsman’s dinners with his company Ferguson Oliver being main Club sponsors on two occasions and shirt sponsors for over 20 years with this tradition continuing today through Chase de Vere.
In recent years Ken represented the Club at National level serving as League One/Two Club Representative on the Board of the SPFL on two occasions and serving on the Scottish FA Professional Game Board whilst continuing as Secretary of the Forfarshire FA.
MARTIN SMITH:- Martin joined Brechin City FC in July 1982 when he was appointed to the BCFC Management Committee as a representative of the BCFC Supporters Club.
Martin threw himself into the role immediately by setting up a fund raising campaign that, amongst other things, saw the launch of the Pound a Week Club with over 170 fans signing up in the first few weeks.
Martin was subsequently appointed Club Treasurer in September 1983 - a role he held for over 35 years as well as becoming the Club’s Vice Chairman in 2007.
Martin’s main responsibilities at the Club were to maintain and monitor match day finances. Aside from this you were always likely to find Martin at Glebe Park on any day of the week as he helped with access and regular maintenance of the stadium.
More recently Martin took upon himself to put his years of teaching to good use by setting up and maintaining a number of community projects including the Football Fans in Training, Festive Friends Christmas Meal, 4-4-2 reading challenge and the Babies Breastfeeding Club.
Martin’s love of all sport lead him to taking a leading role with the organising of the Club’s annual fund raising golf event - something he has continued to assist the Club with.
Martin always had the players welfare at heart as he strived to make them welcome at the Club and to make them feel part of the Brechin City family.
Never one to forget a story, or to frequently repeat it, Martin can recall all of the highs and lows he has experienced as a Club official but more importantly as a true fan.
