Brechin City 0 Dumbarton 1

Match Report - By John Hoey

Brechin City 0 Dumbarton 1

Brechin City were knocked out of the first round of the Scottish League Cup by Dumbarton after a 1-0 victory at Glebe Park.

Despite the huge disappointment of the result, City fans will have been pleased with the performance of their team against a side for a higher division as there is absolutely no doubt that City deserved to take something from the game.

The two best chances of the first-half came City's way Robert Thomson hitting the side-netting after quarter of an hour when a great pass from Alan Trouten put him in the clear, and Trouts himself uncharacteristically passing up a golden opportunity in the 33rd minute when he side-footed the ball past the post after great work from Andy Jackson which had created the opening.

The Sons, despite enjoying the lion's share of possession during the opening 45 minutes lacked any real penetration their only chance of the half coming five minutes before the break when a good run and cross from Mark Gilhaney created a chance for Bryan Prunty, but the midfielder blasted wide from good position.

City took the game to their opponents after the break but again chances at both ends were few and far between as both midfields tried to stifle out the opposition but the vital breakthrough came in the 59th minute when Dumbarton scored what proved to be the winner.

A long throw in from the left by Scott Linton bobbled about in the City box and Sons midfielder Andy Graham was first to react sticking out a leg amongst the ruck of players surrounding to divert the ball past Graeme Smith in the City goal.

This stung City into an immediate response and they then laid siege on the Dumbarton goal in an effort to grab the equaliser and take the tie to extra-time but solid defending by the visitors rearguard stifled their efforts.
