Alloa Athletic 2 Brechin City 3

Match Report - By John Hoey

Plucky Brechin City beat Alloa at Recreation Park by 3-2 but despite their victory, the team are out of the First Division Play-Offs as Alloa's 2-0 victory at Glebe Park on Wednesday night means that they win the tie overall by 4-3

Despite the disappointment of their defeat, the City players can be proud of the way they performed and if they had had a rub of the green during the course of the 90 minutes, they may well have been the team facing Dunfermline Athletic in next week's two-leg final rather than the Wasps.

City got off to a perfect start after just three minutes when Andy Jackson fired home a Ryan Ferguson cross but they were left stunned and shell-shocked when Alloa equalised with a highly questionable goal nine minutes before the break when Kevin Cawley, looking well offside fired home to level the match.

City got their noses in front again seven minutes into the second-half when Alan Trouten converted from the penalty-spot after Jonathan Tiffoney had handled a Ryan Stewart shot in the box but the hosts came back again to level the match for the second-time when Calum Elliot fired home a penalty after he had appeared to have been pulled down by Ewan Moyes in the City box.

City still pushed forward in an attempt to rescue the tie and they went in front again deep into injury-time when Jackson scored his second goal of the afternoon, slotting the ball home from close-range. However, referee William Collum blew the final whistle at the re-start and City's heroic attempts to win the tie overall were in vain.
