Brechin City 2 Albion Rovers 0

Match Report - By John Hoey

Brechin City 2 Albion Rovers 0

Brechin City will definitely finish in third place in the Irn Bru Second Division table after a comfortable and convincing victory over relegated Albion Rovers at Glebe Park last night.

City won the game by 2-0 thanks to a brace from Derek Carcary but the final score-line should and could have been much wider if City had taken all of the chances that came their way. Nevertheless, manager Ray McKinnon would have been delighted with the way his team set about their task last night which augurs well for the play-off games against Alloa next week.

Wasps boss Paul Hartley was an interested spectator in the stand last night and he will no doubt have food for thought as he prepares his team for the eagerly anticipated matches.

City totally dominated the opening 45 minutes and had a chance after just one minute when Alan Trouten made space on the right and crossed into the box for Andy Jackson whose shot was well saved by Graeme Shepherd in the Albion goal.

City had another chance three minutes later when Alex Pursehouse made ground on the right and sent a great cross into the box for Jackson whose diving header went just past the post.

City were pushing forward at every opportunity and they got their reward when they grabbed the opener after 18 minutes when a Gary Fusco pile-driver was parried by Shepherd into the path of Derek Carcary who made no mistake from around eight yards out.

City should have made it two a couple of minutes later when a Gerry McGlauchlan header from a Carcary corner but Shepherd brought off a superb save.

Another great City move should also have brought a goal a couple of minutes later when Pursehouse sent Carcary away on the right and when his cross came into the box Jackson was unlucky to see his header go just past the post.

City were piling on the pressure and a Fusco blasted a Ewan Moyes pass just wide of the post after 30 minutes and six minutes later Carcary dispossessed Kieran Green and bored in on goal but he sent his left-foot drive just wide of the target and a couple of minutes later Carcary sent a great pass through to Trouten whose shot came back off the underside of the bar before being cleared.

City continued in the ascendency after the break and in the 52nd minute a great run by Pursehouse ended with him firing a shot just past the post.

Another goal just had to come and it duly did after 68 minutes.

Johnny Stewart played a good pass through to Carcary in the box and Del kept his composure before slotting the ball past Shepherd into the bottom corner of the net.

With four minutes remaining, Ryan Stewart who had come on for Ryan Ferguson headed the ball into the path of Jackson who fired just past Shepherd's right-hand post.
