Brechin City 2 Arbroath 0

Match Report - By Brechin City

Brechin City require just four points from their remaining five matches to make sure of clinching third position and a play-off spot after defeating near neighbours Arbroath by 2-0 at Glebe Park.

Forfar and Arbroath can still technically overcome City provided they win all of their remaining games and City fail to take any points from their next five matches but although that remains a possible scenario the odds of that happening would seem to be very unlikely given City's impressive second-half performance against the Lichties when with five first-team regulars missing they still managed to record a deserved win against a side who had to take three points if they wanted to have any realistic chance of reaching the play-offs. A home win against Albion Rovers on Tuesday night should all but ensure City a place in the play-offs with third place in the table also virtually guaranteed.

Andy Jackson and Gerry McGlauchlan scored City's goals in a very good second-half display when the hosts had the upper hand in terms of possession and pressure

The first-half was pretty much a non-event with both teams unable to create anything much in front of goal. Arbroath had a good opportunity after 12 minutes when Steven Doris outpaced McGlauchlan and bore in on goal but Michael Andrews moved quickly off his line to smother the ball at the striker's feet to avert the danger and on the stroke of half-time City had a half-chance when Ryan Ferguson moved clear in the penalty area but he shot well wide of the target.

City started the second-half with Johnny Brown replacing Graham Hay and from the outset they began to exert a lot of pressure on the Lichties defence. This paid off after 64 minutes when David McKenna who had replaced Beau Longridge just five minutes earlier collected the ball wide on the right and delivered a superb cross into the box for JACKSON who bulleted a terrific header well beyond the reach of Scott Morrison in the Arbroath goal.

City continued to push forward and they got their reward with four minutes remaining when McGLAUCHLAN blasted home from close-range after player-boss Paul Sheerin had given the ball away.
