Ayr United 3 Brechin City 0

Match Report - By John Hoey

Ayr United 3 Brechin City 0

Brechin City went down to their fourth successive league defeat against ten-man Ayr at Somerset Park with the home side winning comfortably against a lack-lustre City side.

The result sees City drop to 8th position in the Second Division table having scored only one goal in their last four outings, conceding no fewer than ten goals during the same period.

City fans will have been hugely disappointed with their team's showing against a side who had to play for over 70 minutes with ten men after defender Austin McCann was red-carded for deliberate hand-ball in the home penalty-box but Ayr keeper Ally Brown saved Andy Jackson's penalty-kick and this gave the hosts the confidence to grab the opener just eleven minutes later.

Michael Moffat latched on to a great through pass from Ryan McStay, and raced past the City defence before lobbing keeper Michael Andrews.

City had more than their fair share of possession during the remainder of the half, but they couldn't make their extra man count with a Jackson shot which whistled just past the post in 37 minutes their only opportunity of reducing the deficit.

The Honest Men started the second-half on the offensive and they doubled their lead in the 52nd minute when a David Sinclair corner was headed in by Marc Twaddle and although Johnny Brown appeared to clear the ball of the line, the referee and linesman awarded a goal.

The City players looked completely shell-shocked and they lost a disastrous third goal in the 66th minute. Moffat powered towards the City goal leaving several defenders in his wake before firing in a shot which Andrews did well to parry before Sinclair blasted the rebound into the roof of the net.

Alan Trouten had a chance to narrow Ayr's advantage in the 80th minute when he found himself in space in the home penalty-area but he shot wide of the target which summed up a hugely disappointing day for the visitors.
