Match Report - By John Hoey

Forfar Athletic 1 Brechin City 0

Brechin City came away from Station Park with nothing to show for their efforts after a 1-0 defeat from near neighbours Forfar Athletic.

The only goal of a keenly contested and hard fought derby came in the 22nd minute when former City midfielder Martyn Fotheringham blasted home the winner after he had picked up a short pass from Gavin Swankie and forced his way into the City penalty-box.

City can justifiably feel aggrieved though that they failed to take anything from the match.

They had strong claims for a penalty turned down after eight minutes when Craig Molloy appeared to be brought down in the box by Michael Bolchoweckyj and a couple of minutes after Forfar's goal, a Scott Dalziel header appeared to cross the line but referee Frank McDermott waved away City protests.

The referee also failed to take appropriate action after hefty challenges on Molloy and then Ryan Stewart who both had to come off as a result and the ref further angered City supporters when he booked Gerry McGlauchlan, Alan Trouten and Ewan Moyes.

Despite this, City should have equalised in the 54th minute when Trouten forced his way into the Forfar penalty-box only to steer the ball wide of the target and in the 88th minute City fans must have thought that their team had levelled the match when an Andy Jackson volley from a Johnny Brown cross looked a goal all the way only for Loons keeper Derek Soutar to bring off a superb point-blank save
