Brechin City 2 Inverness Caledonian Thistle 1

Match Report - By John Hoey

Brechin City 2 ICT 1

Brechin City shocked SPL opponents Inverness with a fine 2-1 win in last night's friendly at Glebe Park.

The result and the level of performance from a very impressive City side will be a real confidence booster ahead of Sunday's eagerly awaited home Ramsdens Cup tie against Rangers.

Graeme Shinnie opened the scoring for the visitors three minutes before half-time but City hit back in the second-half with two goals from David McKenna (one from the penalty-spot) to earn a well-deserved victory.

Inverness dominated the opening stages and had their first scoring opportunity after 10 minutes when Shane Sutherland sent a shot from the edge of the box well wide of the target.

City hit back and new signing Johnny Brown sent a first-time shot just wide of the target after 12 minutes with Ryan Stewart coming close for the hosts a couple of minutes later when his fierce right-foot drive from just within the box was tipped over the bar by Ryan Esson.

City were now having the upper hand and Craig Molloy sent a 25yard free-kick just wide of the target after 18 minutes and they came even closer seven minutes later when Derek Carcary played in McKenna who drove the ball just wide of Esson's left-hand post.

Caley had a half-chance just on the half-hour when Billy McKay fired in a 25 yard shot which went narrowly past and they had a better opportunity in the 38th minute when Aaron Doran delivered a good cross from the right which fell nicely for Sutherland but he blasted the ball into the side-netting.

The visitors though made the breakthrough with three minutes of the half remaining when Andrew Sinnie sent a good pass across the box for namesake Graeme who blasted home a great left-foot drive.

Caley should have doubled their lead seven minutes into the second-half when McKay had the goal at his mercy but Michael Andrews brought off a superb point-blank save.

Esson was called into action five minutes later when he brought off a fine save from McKenna but the keeper was helpless to stop City's equaliser in the 62nd minute when McKenna blasted home a penalty after Molloy had been brought down in the box by Owen Jones and the striker put the gloss on a fine performance when he volleyed home the winner from just inside the penalty-box with a minute of the game remaining.
