Brechin City 2 Dumbarton 2

Match Report - By John Hoey

BRECHIN CITY 2 DUMBARTON 2

It was a case of honours shared at the Glebe this afternoon as City and Dumbarton shared four goals in highly entertaining game.
City went in at the interval two goals up thanks to Paul McManus and Rory McKenzie, but a Bryan Prunty penalty in the 57th minute and a superb free kick from Scott Agnew seventeen minutes from time earned Alan Adamson’s men a deserved share of the spoils.
Scot Buist was missing from City’s opening line-up because of suspension but Ewan Moyes and Jim Lister had recovered from injury and both were in manager Jim Weir’s opening eleven.
The Sons probably just had the edge in a free-flowing opening 20 minutes but City began to exert some pressure on the visitors’ defence and they deservedly grabbed the opener in the 30th minute.
Garry Brady played a good cross-field pass to Jonny Linday on the left bye-line and the young full-back pushed forward before delivering a great cross into the box for Paul McManus whose first-time volley gave Sons keeper Stephen Grindlay no chance.
City kept pushing forward and they got their reward just three minutes later when they doubled their lead.
A Gary Fusco free-kick was headed on in the opposition penalty-box by Moyes straight to McKenzie who fired home a wonderful overhead free-kick which Grindlay was absolutely helpless to stop.
City kept up the pressure at the beginning of the second-half and thry should have perhaps made it three in the 48th minute when Lister headed a Brady pass into the path of McManus who shot just wide of the post.
City were in the ascendency at this stage but Dumbarton in turn began to put some pressure on the City rearguard and it paid off in the 57th minute when they reduced the deficit from the penalty-spot.
Prunty picked up the ball just at the edge of the City penalty-box and as he tried to move closer to goal, he was impeded in the box by Lindsay and referee Paul Robertson had no hesitation in awarding a penalty.
Prunty himself stepped up to take the kick and he blasted a low drive straight past Craig Nelson into the net.
This goal gave the visitors a huge lift and they drew level in the 73rd minute when they won a free-kick at the edge of the City box.
City fans would have been apprehensive when they saw Scott Agnew lining up to take the kick and they had every right to be as he curled a magnificent drive into the top right-hand corner of the net giving Nelson no chance
