Brechin City 1 Cowdenbeath 0

Match Report - By John Hoey

Brechin City gained their first league win in nine weeks after a deserved 1-0 victory against league leaders Cowdenbeath at Glebe Park.

City striker Charlie King scored his third goal in three weeks to seal victory for City who now move up from second bottom spot to sixth place in the Second Division table just three points behind fourth placed East Fife.

Manager Jim Weir had one enforced change to make with Jim Lister coming in for the suspended Bryan Hodge.

The Blue Brazil threatened as early as the 5th minute when full-back Kenny Adamson fired in a 25 yard shot from the left which Craig Nelson was thankful to see go just past the far post.

City's first chance came in the 23rd minute when a Craig Molloy 30 yard effort went just over the bar.

City came closer a couple of minutes later when Gary Fusco had a shot deflected and from the resultant corner, Mick Dunlop headed just past the post.

A Marc McKenzie shot from the edge of the box dipped just over the bar in the 35th minute and Jon Robertson had the ball in the net for the visitors five minutes later but the goal was disallowed by referee Brian Colvin for a foul on City keeper Nelson.

There were early chances for both sides in the opening stages of the second-half with Cowden keeper Thomas Flynn having to look sharp to keep out a drive from Scott Smith and seconds later at the other end, Nelson did superbly well to bring off a point-blank save from McKenzie.

City though broke the deadlock two minutes later.

A Paul McLean free-kick was flicked on by Fusco into the path of King and Chucky took a couple of paces foward before sending a peach of a shot into the bottom corner of the net.
