Brechin City 2 Stenhousemuir 0

Match Report - By John Hoey

Brechin City opened their league campaign with a deserved 2-0 victory over Stenhousemuir in an entertaining game at Glebe Park.

Stenny had the first opportunity after six minutes when a Brown Ferguson header from an Eric Paton free-kick was well saved by Craig Nelson.

City hit straight back and Garry Brady adeptly beat two defenders on the right touchline before delivering a pin-point cross into the penalty-box for Paul McManus who was unlucky to see his header come back off the crossbar.

Stevie Murray then fired in a shot for the visitors after 10 minutes which Nelson did well to save.

City responded again and a McManus shot went just past the post and a David McKenna drive was palmed away by McCluskey after 19 minutes.

Iain Thomson had a good chance for the Warriors eight minutes before the break when the ball fell kindly for him in the penalty-box but his close-range drive was blocked by Craig Molloy.

Both teams pushed hard to get the opening goal after the break and City came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 57th minute when Molloy won the ball in the box and passed to McManus who seemed set to score but he somehow steered the ball wide of the target and McCluskey did brilliantly for the visitors six minutes later when he superbly parried a fierce Molloy drive round the post.

However, the stalemate was finally broken in the 72nd minute with a cracking goal from David McKenna.

Molloy won the ball in the penalty-box and passed across to McKenna who fired a superb right-foot drive past McCluskey into the top corner of the net.

This goal gave City confidence and they added a second goal when Paul McManus scored his first goal for the club nine minutes later when he tapped the ball home after McCluskey had parried a Derek Carcary shot into his path.
