Brechin City 2 Clyde 4

Match Report - By

Brechin City were knocked out of the first round of the Scottish Communities League Cup after a 4-2 defeat from Third Division Clyde at Glebe Park.

It was a winning return to Brechin for former City manager Jim Duffy who must have been delighted with his young side’s thoroughly deserved victory.

A Gerry McGlauchlan own goal in the 20th minute gave Clyde the lead but City equalised through David McKenna six minutes later.

Both teams pushed hard for the decisive second goal after the break but defences were well on top and goal-scoring chances were few.

City had a great chance to grab the lead two minutes into extra-time when they won a penalty but Craig Molloy blasted the spot-kick high over the bar.

The hosts were made to rue this miss five minutes later when John Sweeney blasted home a penalty after Mark Archdeacon had been brought down in the box by Scott Buist who was then ordered off.

The Bully Wee then increased their advantage through Archdeacon eight minutes later and although Charlie King pulled a goal back for City in the 114th minute Iain Gray fired home the visitors fourth goal to wrap up victory.
