Brechin City 1 Airdrie United 2

Match Report - By John Hoey

Airdrie United boosted their play-off chances with a great 2-1 victory over second-placed Brechin at Glebe Park.

The Diamonds should have grabbed the opener after just four minutes when Scott Gemmill was clean through on the City goal but Craig Nelson brought off a brilliant save to deny him.

City's first chance came six minutes later when Mark Ridgers saved well from David McKenna.

Nelson came to City's rescue again six minutes later when he made a superb point-blank save from a Gemmill header.

Airdrie were putting the City defence under lots of pressure and they deservedly grabbed the lead in the 32nd minute.

Gary McKay-Stevens sent in a dangerous cross from the left which Gerry McGlauchan, under pressure, deflected into his own net.

Gemmill should have made it two a couple of minutes later when he raced clear of the City defence and shot for goal but Ewan Moyes cleared off the line.

City pushed forward immediately after the break and scored the equaliser within the first couple of minutes.

Mitch Megginson forced his way into the Diamonds penalty-box and slipped the ball to McKenna who made no mistake from around two yards.

Airdrie though picked up from where they had left off in the first-half and they regained the lead in the 56th minute with a cracker of a goal.

Ryan Donnelly picked up the ball just outside the City box and wheeled round before unleashing a superb left-foot drive which left Nelson clutching at thin air.

Craig Molloy almost levelled for City a minute later, but his close-range shot hit the post and Ridgers gathered the rebound.

McKay-Stevens who had been a constant thorn in the side of the City defence almost made it three in the 79th minute when he fired in a shot from just outside the box which Nelson did well to palm away.
