Brechin City 0 Alloa Athletic 0

Match Report - By Steven Mew

City had to settle for a share of the points on Saturday in what was arguably their worst performance of the season against fellow play-off hopefuls Alloa Athletic.

The game was a lacklustre affair and Brechin, in all honesty, did not look like finding the net, although the conditions didn’t help matters for either side.

The visitors started off the better team and they were in control for the first half hour of the game. Early on City were given a scare when a cross from the left hand side was headed against the post by Adam Coakley. Shortly afterwards a Brown Ferguson free kick from 18 yards just went wide of the goal.

Nelson then made a good stop to deny Kyle McAuley and the experienced goalkeeper also done well to tip over a Scott Agnew shot which looked to be dipping into the net.

Despite the constant pressure from the visitors, City did manage to conjure up a couple of chances in the first half. Davie White came close with a header from an Iain Diack cross then Diack himself had a chance when he was played through on goal but he blazed the ball over the bar under pressure from the Alloa defence.

City looked a little livelier in the second half but they failed to really test Raymond Jellema in the Alloa goal. Byers was given a chance from a Michael Paton cross but the Alloa keeper was alive to the danger.

Nelson had to be on his toes once again to stop a Joe Andrew shot before saving a free kick from Brown Ferguson.

Overall, a dire game in which both sides never really looked like scoring, although the conditions did make things difficult for both sides.

Next up for City is a difficult trip to Dingwall to take on runaway league leaders Ross County at Victoria Park. City will be looking for a positive result to keep the pressure on Alloa and Peterhead for the last play-off spot, although they will have to be at their best.
