Match Preview | Brechin City v Buckie Thistle

City are in Scottish Cup action tomorrow afternoon as we come up against familiar foes Buckie Thistle in the First Round at the Carnegie Fuels Stadium at Glebe Park.

There is plenty of history between the two sides, with City and Buckie having gone toe-to-toe on numerous occasions in recent years during their respective challenges for the Highland League title.

TEAM NEWS

City will continue to be without the services of the injured Spencer Moreland, Kieran Inglis, Kyle Bell, Euan Spark and Adam Hutchinson. After playing for his previous Club Drumchapel United in the preliminary round, Bradley Rodden is unfortunately cup tied.

MANAGERS COMMENTS

Reflecting on the 3-0 victory over Dunipace last weekend, Manager Andy Kirk commented, “I was delighted with the result especially after the previous game against Hill of Beath where we were really disappointed with the performance. We needed to try and put that right and although we started ok and got ourselves into good positions, we were still a bit wasteful with the final ball.

“Again we started the second half ok but then we seemed to just lose our way again – we got a little too deep and the gaps got too big. Dunipace were picking up second balls, caused us a few problems and hit the post with a free kick. They had a lot of good moments in the game and they played quite well, especially at the start of the second half.

“Again we had opportunities to kill the game off but we were wasteful with a pass or two in the front line. Once we got the penalty it settled us down again and the momentum swung back with us and we could have potentially scored one or two more but we still need to tidy up a few things.”

Curtis Main and Bradley Rodden both made their debuts for the Club and Andy was pleased with how they slotted in. He said, “It was a good start for Curtis – he’s obviously not played a lot of football but he got his goal and he’ll get a lot better for us once he gets more games and the sharpness that will come with that. He’s a fit, strong, experienced player and he knows exactly what he’s doing. Brad is more of a forward player but he can play at full back as well so he is quite versatile. We had him playing further back to see if we could have a bit more attacking threat down the left hand side and it was a good game to break him in. I was pleased with them both.“

Looking ahead to the Scottish Cup tie against Buckie Thistle tomorrow afternoon, Andy added, “It’s the Scottish Cup and it’s exciting – there’s always a different atmosphere and feel about it. We’re looking forward to the game and we’ve got to build on the positives from last week and try to do that for as close to 90 minutes as possible and get rid of the inconsistency that we’re finding at the minute.“

PREVIOUS MEETING

Buckie Thistle 0-3 Brechin City | 25th February 2026

City were comfortable winners in the last fixture between the sides at Victoria Park back in February thanks to three first half goals. Mitch Taylor grabbed the opener for City after 33 minutes and five minutes later, Grady McGrath doubled the advantage for the visitors. Shortly before the break, City more or less had the game sewn up as Mitch Taylor added his second of the night.

LAST TIME OUT

City returned to winning ways last weekend with a 3-0 victory over Dunipace at the Carnegie Fuels Stadium at Glebe Park. Ryan Blair’s stunning free kick after just 4 minutes gave City the advantage, but the suffered a few scary moments before they were awarded a penalty midway through the second half which Curtis Main duly converted on his debut. City now had their tails up and they sealed the win three minutes from time with Cormac Christie also grabbing his first City goal.

Buckie’s last fixture came a fortnight ago as they went down 3-1 at home to Nairn County. Despite Josh Peters putting the Jags in the lead 7 minutes into the second half, they succumbed to defeat with Kenny MacInnes, Paul Brindle and Ben Kelly on target for the Wee County.
