Dumbarton 1 Brechin City 0

Match Report - By Grant Hood

City’s woeful sequence of results continued with a 13th one-goal Championship defeat of the season at the hands of fellow part-timers Dumbarton.

A fine left footed strike from Dimitris Froxylias after 37 minutes was enough to secure all 3 points for the hosts in a game which did little to warm up supporters of either side on a cold night at The YOUR Radio 103FM Stadium.

With Willie Dyer and Aron Lynas suspended, and no fewer than 4 players sidelined through injury, City’s injury jinx hit again with Dundee loanee Kosta Gadzhalov leaving the field in the first half with a dislocated shoulder. It was harsh on the Bulgarian, who sustained a facial injury in his only other start for The Club.

The goal for the homesters was one of few moments of quality as both sets of players struggled to come to terms with the sticky playing surface. Ironically it came only a few minutes after City’s most threatening spell when the ball pinged around the home goalmouth without anyone in red making a telling contact.

The goal itself came from a breakaway down the home side’s left and, with 3 City defenders looking to block a shot from Andy Stirling in a central position, he fed the ball wide to Froxylias on the right who cut in and fired a delicious shot past Paddy O’Neil into the far corner. Up until that point The Sons did look the more threatening and creative in the final third, but the quality of their finishing reflected that of a team who had scored only once in their last 10 games.

The second half produced little of note as Stevie Aitken’s side held out comfortably against a shot-shy City side. The yellow card count did little to help Brechin’s cause either, with cautions on the night for Kalvin Orsi, Gary Fusco, Euan Spark and Callum Tapping.

Darren Dods’ men will have the opportunity for an early retort with The Sons making a trip to Glebe Park on Saturday, giving City an opportunity once again to rid this well documented hoodoo and finally get that first win of the season.
