Brechin City v Greenock Morton: Match Preview - By Grant Hood

Former Brechin City manager Jim Duffy brings his Morton team to town to face Darren Dods in his 100th game in charge of the Glebe Park side, with the current City supremo looking for his players to deliver a first Championship win of the season.

It’s the ninth league game of the season, meaning that the Greenock side is the last remaining opponent City face in a season full of learning for the players and coaching team at Glebe Park. Clashes between the two sides haven’t exactly been plentiful in latter times, most recently lining up as League One adversaries during 2014/15. This saw a series of clashes in which Ray McKinnon’s City remained undefeated in 4 matches, nearly ripping the heart out of Morton’s title run-in with four games to go – only for Jim Duffy’s side to win their remaining games to secure the top slot.

With SPFL fixtures suspended last weekend due to the international break, City had a bounce game at Stenhousemuir which provided an opportunity for players who have latterly been on the bench – such as Ally Love and Liam Watt – to get valuable game time.

The squad news coming out of Glebe Park is mixed. Whilst Aron Lynas returns to contention from his 2-game suspension the latest on Andy Jackson and Chris O’Neil is altogether less favourable. Popular striker ‘Jacko’ is sidelined until around Christmas time due to a stomach tear, the only positive being that it’s now clear that an operation is not necessary. Chris O’Neil suffered a broken toe in the last home game against Dunfermline Athletic, and that will keep him out for a few weeks. Euan Smith has returned to training, but may still be a bit away from a return to Championship action.

Reports from Greenock confirm that captain Lee Kilday remains out of contention through injury and mifielder Connor McManus is rated as doubtful. The ‘Ton fans will be delighted that forward Jai Quitongo comes back into the reckoning after missing the previous game against Falkirk.

Supporters of both sides are reminded that free access to The City Club is available to over-18s from 1pm through until kick-off – perhaps with a visit to the newly re-located Supporters Club shop en route. The City Club re-opens after full-time through to 8pm, with live BT Sport coverage of Watford v Arsenal from the English Premier League.

Copies of Brechin City’s official Matchday Magazine “A View from the Hedge” will be available for sale prior to the kick-off for only £2, which includes a feature on City’s managers since our last season in the second tier over a decade ago.

The match is being sponsored by AP Jess and the matchball has been sponsored by Keith Johnston of Gridifield Ltd - and The Management Committee would like to thank both businesses for their invaluable ongoing support.

The Club will also welcome first time mascot, 11-year old Gabriel Williams - and the match will be refereed by Colin Steven, assisted by Kylie Cockburn and Derek Crothers.

Prior to kick-off, fans of both sides will be made aware of both Clubs’ support for the Show Racism the Red Card Campaign.
