Brechin Vics 0-5 Brechin City - By Grant Hood

In a novel experience for the town’s football fans, Brechin City faced Brechin Vics at Victoria Park in a match to mark the centenary of the local junior side.

Before the kick-off there were commemorative photographs and the presentation of a gift from City Chairman Ken Ferguson to the Vics’ Committee in recognition of the historic milestone.

The football itself was played in quite superb overhead conditions, with the pitch looking terrific.

City started the game very much on the front foot and within 10 minutes found themselves 2 goals up, with only a headed goal line clearance and an outstanding reaction save from the Vics’ keeper (to avoid an own goal) preventing the SPFL Championship side from romping further ahead.

The first goal came as the result of a shot from Player Manager Darren Dods being turned goalwards by Isaac Layne, although the final touch may have come off a home defender. The second goal was created by local boy Euan Spark, who saw his cross headed home by midfielder Finn Graham.

The young junior side began to find their feet and conceded nothing further until 10 minutes before half-time when Ally Love blasted a left-foot strike low past the keeper.

Isaac Layne headed home a fourth some 9 minutes into the second half, before another header from Finn Graham finished the scoring with 9 minutes left.

The game was played in front of some 150 fans and conducted in good spirit with handshakes all round at the final whistle. It saw valuable 90-minute run-outs for the likes of Liam Watt and Gary Fusco – as well as a promising central defender called Darren Dods.
