Stirling Albion v Brechin City: Match Preview - By Grant Hood

Darren Dods’ Brechin City squad face Stirling Albion tonight in the third of four Group A games in this season’s Betfred Cup.

With a defeat to Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the opening round of fixtures, followed up by a draw with Forfar Athletic, City will be keen to get a first win of the season against their Forthbank hosts.

The home side started the section with a defeat to local rivals Falkirk, before drawing with an ICT side who had competently disposed of the Glebe Park side 3 days prior. Since then Albion enjoyed a slightly surprising 3-1 victory at Station Park against a Forfar side which City failed to overcome – so the City management and players know they’re in for a tough test against, supposedly, the lowest ranked team in the group.

City go into the game with Ryan McGeever and Chris O’Neil added to the squad, both of whom featured in the friendly against Aberdeen on Sunday having missed out on the first two Cup Ties.

However, with a yellow card in both of these opening games, skipper Paul McLean is suspended for the tie and, with the exception of longer-term injury victims Euan Smith and Liam Watt, the remainder of the squad is available for selection – although there’s a slight injury doubt over one un-named player.

The two sides last met in the group stages of the same competition last season at The Glebe. Having missed out on the Saturday opener, this Tuesday night clash was City’s opening game and it took a very late goal from Alan Trouten to secure a victory for the home side after a penalty from Blair Henderson had cancelled out an early opener from Ally Love.

This tie will be refereed by Alan Newlands and kicks off at 7.45pm.

The Supporters Club is offering coach travel for this match, which will leave the usual St Ninian’s Square departure point at 5pm. The contact number for enquiries is 07925 227826.
