Brechin City 2 Cowdenbeath 2

Match Report - By John Hoey

Brechin City 2 Cowdenbeath 2

Brechin City and Cowdenbeath shared four goals in an entertaining match at Glebe Park. This was a match that City had hoped to win to narrow the points gap between the sides to just four points but with the Blue Brazil leading by 2-1 deep into injury-time, it looked as though all three points would be heading to Central Park but substitute Scott Shepherd rescued a vital point for his side when he fired home a low right-foot drive in the 93rd minute.

The result leaves City propping up the League One table, seven points behind Saturday's opponents and one point behind Angus neighbours Forfar Athletic who went down by 3-2 against Peterhead at Balmoor Stadium.

Manager Darren Dods made two changes from the side that drew with Stenhousemuir a week last Tuesday with the manager himself replacing the injured Darren McCormack in central defence while Scott Shepherd made way for Jonathan Tiffoney.

City started the match really strongly and they should have grabbed the opening goal within the first minute. Andy Jackson played through Lewis Spence who pushed forward before firing in a shot which was parried by Cowden keeper Grant Adam into the path of Robert Thomson whose fierce drive was cleared off the line by Kenny Adamson. That miss proved to be costly for the hosts as the Blue Brazil opened the scoring just five minutes later when Jack Beaumont flighted a free-kick from the left into the City box for Christopher Kane who glanced a header well beyond the reach of City keeper Graeme Smith.

City hit back with Thomson chasing a long ball from defence and squaring the ball across for Spence who tried to lob the keeper but unfortunately his effort was too high.

In the 19th minute, Declan McDaid collected the ball wide on the left and tried a shot which Smith saved, and seconds later at the other end, Thomson fired in a shot which was inches past the target.

McDaid came close again for the visitors in the 26th minute when he fired in a shot which Smith did well to keep out with City responding five minute later when Thomson played the ball across to Willie Dyer who pushed forward before sending in drive which hit the side-netting.

Beaumont then fired in a 25yard drive for the visitors which went narrowly past the post but City again came back, and this time deservedly grabbed the equaliser with a great piece of play.

James Dale started the move when he played a great through ball wide on the right to David Weatherston who pushed forward to the bye-line before delivering a great cross into the box for Jonathan Tiffoney who blasted the ball last Adam.

Play as swinging from end to end with both sides looking to add to their tally and the Fifers came really close with two minutes of the half remaining when Smith brought off a superb save to block a 20 yard pile-driver from Greig Spence.

City then had very strong claims for a penalty denied by referee Craig Charleston when a Jackson shot from the edge of the box was clearly handled by Cowden centre-back Adamson but the ref who had a clear view of the incident incredibly waved play on.

City began where they left off at the beginning of the second-half and they should have grabbed the lead within the first three minutes when Jackson made inroads into the visitors penalty-box and blasted in a shot which rebounded from the base of the post into the path of Thomson whose right-foot drive was blocked by Adam and they missed another great chance three minutes later when Spence was in the clear. But he fluffed his shot with the goal at his mercy.

There was a huge let-off for City in the 52nd minute when Dods allowed Spence to slip by him but Smith came to City's rescue, smothering the ball at the striker's feet and the keeper was in action again just on the hour mark when he brought off a tremendous save to deny Kieran Gibbons.

With play again swinging from end to end, the keeper came to his side's rescue once again when substitute Ross Caldwell who looked blatantly offside ran through on goal with Smith bringing off a great save to deny what looked like a certain goal.

However the visitors grabbed what appeared to be the winner with seven minutes remaining when Dean Brett fired in a shot from the edge of the box which the keeper uncharacteristically, allowed to slip under his body.

However, City battled on and they deservedly grabbed the equaliser for the second time in the match deep into injury-time when the ball was played across the face of the penalty-box for Scott Shepherd who drilled a low drive into the bottom corner of the net.
