Brechin City 0 Peterhead 2

Match Report - By John Hoey

Brechin City 0 Peterhead 2

Peterhead will go into the hat for the third round draw of the Petrofac Training Cup after a comfortable 2-0 victory over Brechin City at Glebe Park.

This was City's first defeat of the season and to be frank, they looked a shadow of the side that had played so well in their previous three games against Stenhousemuir, Dunfermline and Cowdenbeath. Peterhead were the better team on the night and although the City players will be disappointed with their performance, they will have the chance to bounce right back against Stranraer at Stair Park this Saturday.

Manager Ray McKinnon made two changes from the side that started against Stenhousemuir with Gary Fusco and Bobby Barr coming in for Ryan Ferguson and Callum Tapping.

The Blue Toon started the game on the offensive and put pressure on the City goal straight from the kick-off and they scored the opener with an opportunist goal after eight minutes when former City midfielder Jamie Redman was on hand to slot the ball home after a Jamie Stevenson free-kick had come crashing back off the crossbar.

A great move from Peterhead in the 21st minute saw them almost double their lead.

A wonderful run from Stevenson saw him release Redman on the left and the midfielder made a bee-line for the penalty-box before passing inside to Rory McAllister but the ex City striker side-footed the ball wide of the target from only two yards out.

City had a chance to draw level in the 38th minute when a Colin Hamilton cross from the left was headed just wide of the target by Andy Jackson.

The hosts started the second-half on the attack and a Bobby Barr corner was headed just wide of the target by Hamilton in the 47th minute.

However, the Blue Toon wrapped up victory in style in the 58th minute with a wonderful goal.

Skipper Steven Noble started the move playing a great forward pass to McAllister who deftly back-heeled the ball back to his captain who blasted a superb left-foot drive well beyond a helpless Smith.

City tried to hit back with Hamilton trying a shot from 25 yards in the 69th minute but it was well over the bar.

Peterhead though were looking dangerous very time they moved forward and they were unlucky not to increase their advantage four minutes later when Smith tipped a great shot from Mark Millar over the bar.
