Brechin deserved to get at least a replay out of this if not a direct passage to Round 4. Despite a bright start for the underdogs, Morton took the lead against the run of play in the 25th minute. Andy Millen's free kick allowed John Anderson to head into the far corner past Bobby Geddes.

In the first half, Morton had the wind in their faces in poor conditions so most would have felt that they would add to the 1-0 scoreline. Not so however, as Brechin came out determined in the second period and put one of their best performances of the season. Former Rangers keeper Ally Maxwell in the Morton goal made two quality saves. The first he tipped over from Lee Bailey and the second he touched onto the top of bar from Roddy Black. Morton were in the end unable to stop City from getting back level though in the 82nd minute. The impressive Roddy Black rose above the home defence to head a corner past Maxwell. His 8th goal of the season. And 1-1 was how the match finished.

Whether she meant it or not the BBC Reprting Scotland Newsreader was correct in saying: "Morton held Brechin to a draw" - not the other way round as most, including Keith Wright would have predicted.

So Brechin have more than earned a replay and that will take place on Tuesday 8th February at Glebe Park.

The Fourth Round draw has given Brechin the chance to meet Rangers at home (or a neutral venue if they decide to switch it) should they get past Morton. That itself will be no easy task but the most glamorous task in Scottish football awaits. One man looking on at the replay will be Rangers manager Dick Advocaat as he confirmed on Sky TV after the draw. He added that with all due respect he knew nothing at all about Brechin!
